When you're out you SHOULD be enjoying yourself and not sitting holding onto your phone. If I happen to check my phone during the course of an evening (and if it's a raucous dinner out with friends, I might not see my phone for two or three hours) and I have an alert from something I've missed, I'll either respond there and then with a very short message if it's urgent, or I'll wait until the night is over and return the call.
