You're a unique breed. To me, I think where you're struggling is that you're not necessarily clingy, but presumptuous, especially with an independent woman who's told you she had to pull back because she's independent. She likely felt like she was losing control of her own relationship choices, you were just making decisions for her - like inviting yourself over last minute to her house to stay there so you could be closer to your hiking spot. That's very presumptuous. It assumes a level of casualness and security and assumption that's reserved for more serious or long term relationships.
